How We Determine Skill Levels at Mitten Masterpiece

One of the most common questions we hear at Mitten Masterpiece is: “Which skill level should I choose?”
The short answer is simple: anyone can paint any of our kits. Truly.

Our skill levels are not about talent, experience, or artistic ability. They are about time, detail, and how immersive you want your painting experience to be.

Whether you’re brand new to paint-by-number or have completed dozens of kits, every design we create is approachable, rewarding, and designed to be enjoyed by painters ages 12 and up.

What Skill Level Really Means to Us

When we assign a kit as Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced, we are looking at two things only:

  1. The number of paint cells (sections)

  2. The estimated number of hours it takes to complete

That’s it.

There is no such thing as a “hard” kit at Mitten Masterpiece—only kits that invite you to spend more time with them.

Beginner Kits (6+ Hours)

Beginner kits are a great entry point, but they’re just as enjoyable for experienced painters who want a relaxing project.

What to expect:

  • Fewer, larger paint cells

  • Clear shapes and comfortable pacing

  • An estimated 6 or more hours of painting time

These kits are perfect if:

Beginner does not mean basic or boring—it simply means less time-intensive.

Intermediate Kits (10+ Hours)

Intermediate kits offer more detail and a deeper sense of immersion while remaining very approachable.

What to expect:

  • A higher number of paint cells

  • More variation in color and shape

  • An estimated 10 or more hours of painting time

These kits are ideal if:

  • You enjoy settling into a project over a week or two

  • You like seeing details gradually come together

  • You want a balance between relaxation and focus

Many first-time painters start with an Intermediate kit and do beautifully.

Advanced Kits (12+ Hours)

Advanced kits are for painters who love detail and don’t mind committing more time to the process.

What to expect:

  • The highest number of paint cells

  • Smaller, more intricate sections

  • An estimated 12 or more hours of painting time

These kits are perfect if:

  • You enjoy slow, mindful painting sessions

  • You like complex scenes and layered detail

  • You want a truly immersive creative experience

Advanced does not require advanced skills—only patience and time.

Anyone Can Paint Any Level

We want to be very clear about this:

You do not need experience to paint an Intermediate or Advanced kit.
You do not need special skills, training, or artistic talent.

Our paint-by-number kits are easy because:

  • Every color is pre-mixed

  • Every section is clearly labeled

  • You paint one shape at a time

The only real difference between levels is how long you want to spend painting.

If you’re new to paint-by-number and drawn to a detailed design, go for it. Take your time. Paint at your own pace. There’s no deadline and no wrong way to enjoy the process.

Choosing the Right Kit for You

When deciding which skill level to choose, ask yourself just one question:

How much time do I want to commit to this painting?

  • Shorter, more casual experience → Beginner

  • Balanced, immersive project → Intermediate

  • Deep, slow, detail-rich experience → Advanced

No matter which level you choose, you’ll end up with a piece you’re proud to display—and hours of calm, creative enjoyment along the way.

At Mitten Masterpiece, skill level is about time spent, not talent required.
